Services

Providing your pet with the best care possible

We provide many different services to meet all our client’s and patient’s needs.

Consultations

Consultations are by appointment only: please phone or book through our online form. In an emergency we will aim to see you immediately. If you think your pet may require an extended appointment, or you wish to see a particular vet, please mention this at the time of booking.

You and your pet will be called into a consultation room and the vet will give your pet a full physical examination and discuss any problems or concerns with you, possible diagnoses and recommend treatment as required. Following the consultation, you will be provided with any medications prescribed, and a team member will ensure you are confident on how and when to administer the medication.

The reception team will make any follow up appointments required, as well as take payment.

Cat Friendly Clinic

Boness Vets are proud to be accredited with the International Society of Feline Medicine as a Silver level Cat Friendly Clinic. This means it has been certified that our facilities and procedures are as stress free as possible.

Surgery

We offer a very wide range of surgical procedures. It is not possible to list all the areas we do cover, but here are a few:

  • Soft tissue including mass removals
  • Complicated wound management
  • Laparoscopic (key hole) surgery and spays
  • Caesarian sections
  • Cystotomies
  • Dentistry
  • Orthopaedics – including amputations, complex knee surgery – TPLOs, orthozips and stifle stabilisations, ligament damage, bone pinning with or with external fixators and much more.

Diagnostic Services

Our dedicated in-house laboratory enables us to perform the majority of the tests we require right here at the hospital.

Test results are normally available within 24 hours, and in some cases the tests may be run and the results obtained whilst you wait.

Some more specialised tests are sent to a leading external laboratory.

Radiography (X-rays)

Radiography is an important tool in many diagnoses.

The hospital has a specially designated x-ray suite including a powerful digital x-ray machine, which allows us to see the image on screen within seconds of taking the exposure.

We also have the facility to take dental radiographs.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound scanning is a valuable diagnostic tool and we have a human-grade ultrasound machine on site. One benefit of ultrasound scanning is that it can often be used without giving the patient anaesthetic and it is a non-invasive procedure.

It can be used in a range of situations from pregnancy diagnosis to examination of the heart, liver, kidneys and other internal organs.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy enables us to take samples from the stomach, intestines and colon less invasively by use of a camera. This is very important for the investigations of certain conditions such as ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea.

Computed Tomography (CT)

We are pleased to offer this cutting edge service. Computer Tomography (CT) allows us to provide a much higher level of diagnostic imaging.

The high definition images are very useful for diagnosing a range of conditions that otherwise may not have been possible with standard X rays or ultrasound techniques, for example elbow dysplasia, very early tumours and hard to find foreign bodies such as grass seeds.

We not only offer this service to our own clients but also offer an outpatient service to neighbouring practices.

Please contact our reception team if you would like more information.

Keyhole Surgery – Laparoscopy

Keyhole surgery is a minimally invasive alternative to conventional open surgery. It is a method of carrying out an operation without having to make a large incision. When performing keyhole surgery, a tiny camera and long, slender, surgical instruments can be introduced to perform surgery inside the body with maximum precision and minimal trauma.

Your female dog can be spayed laparoscopically rather than by the old fashioned, traditional method. Nearly all bitches can now be spayed laparoscopically, which means less pain for them and a more rapid recovery. Over 85% of Boness dogs are spayed laparoscopically.

Advantages of keyhole surgery?

  • Less painful for your pet
  • Faster healing time
  • Quicker recovery – most dogs will be back to normal the following day
  • Risk of infection reduced – smaller wounds are less likely to be licked
  • Surgeons are able to examine internal organs in greater detail
  • Less risk of bleeding
  • Less trauma

To find out whether your dog is a suitable candidate for keyhole surgery, or to find out more about the procedure and it’s benefits, please speak to one of our team. You can also find out more about veterinary keyhole surgery at www.veterinarylaparoscopy.com.

As well as spaying, other procedures that can be done by keyhole surgery including liver biopsies, retained testicle removal and gastropexy to prevent gastric dilation and torsion in large breeds.

Vaccinations

Every year, when your pet comes to the hospital for their booster vaccination, they will receive a full health check by one of our vets. It is important to ensure they are in good health before vaccinations are given.

Vaccinations against infectious diseases are essential for all dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets. Though we are fortunately seeing less incidences of killer diseases, lapsed vaccinations are the most common reason for outbreaks. For dogs, as well as the routine boosters, we also recommend vaccinating against kennel cough - this vaccine is given as drops into the nose.

Puppies and kittens can start their vaccination programme from as early as 8 weeks old, please discuss with one of our team to find out what is appropriate for your new arrival. Following the initial course, booster vaccinations are essential to maintain immunity.

A year is a long time in a pet’s life, so we advise bringing your pet to us for regular health checks at least every 6 months (pets on long term medication will require more frequent checks). These checks can help to pick up developing problems, and give you a chance to discuss any concerns or areas where you would like advice.

Did you know that 6 monthly health checks are included as part of our Pet Health Club?

Flea and Worm Treatment

We advise regular treatment against fleas and worms, and can advise you on the best product for your pet and how often it should be used. Flea infestations are unpleasant for pet and owner alike, but with regular treatment can be avoided.

Our flea and worming treatment are prescription strength, and with regular use you can ensure your pet is protected against roundworm, tapeworm, lungworm, hookworm and ear mites to name just a few.

If you are unsure of your pet’s weight, please bring them to the hospital where a staff member will be able to weigh them and ensure you are getting the correct dose needed – no appointment is needed for this weight check.

Nurse Clinics

Our experienced nursing team run regular clinics, to support you in caring for your pet to compliment the Vet’s recommendations. These include:

General Nurse Clinics

For general help and advice, flea & worming, nail clips and anal gland expression.

Golden Oldies

Our Golden Oldies clinics provide our older patients with an opportunity to receive some TLC for aching joints. Whether it’s gentle massage or K-Laser therapy, we can tailor the sessions to suit our patient’s needs. We can also discuss the home environment and look at any adaptations which could be made.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy can work very nicely as a complimentary therapy to help with rehabilitation. A variety of techniques can be used as and when necessary to suit the patient and their recovery. Following veterinary referral, the physiotherapy team work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team to aid effective and efficient recovery.

K Laser Therapy – Non Drug Therapy

K Laser Therapy can be used to treat certain conditions and provide a certain degree of pain relief which allows for a reduction in medicinal products.

Examples of conditions that can be treated using K Laser include arthritis and painful joints, wound healing, post-surgery rehabilitation and spinal issues such as intervertebral disc disease.

Weight Clinics

After recommendation from the Vet, the Nurses can discuss ways to aid weight loss for your pet and set up progress targets and checks to keep on track.

Desensitisation visits

If your dog is very anxious when visiting us, we offer ongoing confidence building visits to the practice, working with you and your dog to make your visits less stressful.

Puppy Parties

For puppies who are registered with us and have had their first vaccination we offer an opportunity to socialise with other puppies of similar age whilst providing owners with advise and support on their new arrival.

The Nurses also support the Vets with follow-up appointments post-surgery and ongoing health management of long term conditions.

If you are would like more information on any of our Nurse clinics, please speak to our Reception team.

On our Pet Health Club all nurse consultations are free of charge.

Repeat Prescriptions

To comply with safety recommendations for prescription medications, we must have seen your pet for a veterinary check-up within at least the last three months.

The request will be sent to one of our veterinary surgeons and we will send you an email to confirm whether the request has been approved.

We may need to contact you for additional information.

Requests will usually be processed within two working days.

Pet Travel Scheme

Since Brexit, the rules around travelling with pets has changed. The team at Boness are happy to help guide you if you wish to travel abroad with your pet. There are different processes for those going on holiday with pets and those wishing to emigrate with their pets.

Travelling abroad to the EU on holiday with your pets:

  • Every dog, cat and ferret travelling must have a working microchip identification implanted.
  • Your pet must be vaccinated against Rabies. They must be 12 weeks old as a minimum to have a Rabies vaccination. The vaccination must be given after the microchip is implanted. Rabies booster vaccinations should not be overdue.
  • You can travel with your pet to the EU 21 days after the first Rabies vaccination (vaccination day counts as day 0).
  • You will need to attend an appointment with your pet to see an Official Veterinarian (OV) 1-10 days before entering the EU to sign an Animal Health Certificate (AHC).
  • An AHC is only valid for the specified journey and your pet must return to the UK within 120 days. For repeat journeys, a new AHC is required each time.
  • Certain countries require a tapewormer to be administered, which can be done at the time of the AHC appointment.
  • Your pet will need to have a tapewormer given by a Vet between 1-5 days before re-entering the UK, which you will need to arrange. If your trip is within this timeframe, the wormer can be given at Boness.

If you decide to travel to the EU with your pet, please get in touch with our Reception team who will be happy to help.

Emigrating with your pet

There are different rules depending on which country you are travelling to. Please visit the following website for guidance before getting in touch with our team. https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/animal-and-plant-health-agency
